"The Great Man" by Leo Tolstoy
over 3 years ago – Tue, Aug 04, 2020 at 01:53:44 AM

Dear friends,

As shipping begins, we wanted to give you a look inside our edition, "The Great Man" by Leo Tolstoy. Many have expressed interest in our others books, and we are particularly proud of this one.

This edition contains several underappreciated passages from the epilogues of War and Peace, in which Tolstoy addresses the question: Do individuals affect history? His answer, resoundingly, is no. Though renowned as a novelist, we believe that Tolstoy is underread as a political historian, and we have published these passages – on their own in a book for the first time – in an effort to highlight this aspect of his oeuvre.

The text is printed in Russian and in an original English translation by artist and polyglot Valeria Zecchini. The original Russian is dense and circuitous, and from it Zecchini has produced crystalline English prose – as dense and brilliant as the original, but clear too. Her translation is complimented (with a touch of irony) by six woodcut portraits of “the great man” himself.

Reserve your copy now

If you haven't yet reserved a copy, do so by mid-August and we can send the book alongside your "Masque of the Red Death," waiving your shipping with the code REDDEATH at checkout.

"The Great Man" is the fourth imprint of No Reply Press.
The text is printed in Russian and in an original English translation.
The book features six woodcut illustrations.
Hardbound copies are bound in red cloth with a portrait of Tolstoy inset on the cover.
De Luxe copies are bound in red Morocco and marbled papers made specially for the edition by Russian artist Katy Savelyeva.
"The Great Man" is the same dimensions as "The Masque of the Red Death," and will look quite handsome beside it on a shelf.

If you are interested in reserving a copy, you can do so at our website, and please be sure to use the code REDDEATH at discount to have our shipping waived!  Best wishes, everybody, and more soon,

Shipping begins!
almost 4 years ago – Sun, Aug 02, 2020 at 12:12:26 AM

Dear collectors,

Shipping is beginning today for paperbound copies. It will be slow-going at first, as our office is too small to safely accommodate more than one person at a time. Still, packages should start steadily leaving the building until they're all out!

With each package, we're trying to include a few bits of ephemera printed by friends and fellows of the press this summer. Each should be a little different!

Importantly, if you need to change your address – or if you need us to hold your package until you know what address you'll be using – please reach out now!

This Monday we'll be posting photos from "The Great Man" by Leo Tolstoy, which is included in the collector tiers. In the meantime, a few photos from shipping:

Each package is custom prepared for you – from our letterpress packing list to a few hand-selected pieces of ephemera.
We wrap each book before putting it in its box for shipping.

Best wishes everybody, and more on Monday,

Shipping Update
almost 4 years ago – Thu, Jul 23, 2020 at 10:29:10 PM

Friends, backers, collectors, all ye lovely people,

The paper for our newly-added endpapers arrived yesterday.  We're affixing them this week and, by the middle of next week, we hope to step into the final stages of production. In addition, we've had progress on several fronts:

  • The dying process on the leather for de morte and de luxe copies is nearly finished. No commercially available leathers matched the color we wanted for this edition, so we've had the leather custom-dyed. It's an arduous process, but very soon the leather will be ready for gold tooling.
  • All the labels have been printed letterpress, cut, and are ready to be affixed.
  • All the materials necessary for slipcase-making are acquired and being prepped.
  • Packing lists and bookplates have been printed, and all packaging materials needed for shipping are acquired.

We're getting really close!!! And so, we are confident enough to say that:

We expect to begin shipping paperbound copies at the end of next week, and hardbound copies the week after.

We expect to have everything shipped by the end of August. We'll update you with more details when paperbound shipping begins, and perhaps have a more accurate shipping estimate.

However, the situation may be a little more tenuous for our international backers.

At the moment, there are few trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic flights. This is a problem, because the USPS uses commercial flights to carry packages across. We have seen huge delays in international packages. In a few weeks, we may begin reaching out to international backers to check in about what option works best for each of you. We can send the package normally, hold the package until international shipments become faster and more reliable, or switch to a country-specific courier which, though likely more reliable, will also mean additional shipping charges. We're committed to working with each of you individually, so we'll find solutions for all.

Finally, some photos from our bindery this past week:

As we dye the leather for De Luxe and De Morte copies, we've been gold tooling leather for our other upcoming editions.
We've been delighted to work with French artist Frêle Sivinaigre during her summer fellowship with No Reply. She is designing, printing, and binding a small edition (only fifty copies) of T.S. Eliot's "Preludes" – we expect it to be unlike anything we've published before!

You'll be hearing from us again next week for another shipping update, and a look at our edition, "The Great Man" by Leo Tolstoy, which is included in the collector tiers! In the meantime, very best wishes to all,
