ANNOUNCING: A Scandal in Bohemia
over 3 years ago – Mon, Jan 11, 2021 at 05:14:27 PM

Dear friends,

We are excited to announce our publication of A Scandal in Bohemia by Arthur Conan Doyle, the very first Sherlock Holmes story. The edition is four times longer than "The Masque of the Red Death," offers fine Zerkall-bütten mouldmade papers, and features original artwork.

Explore and reserve your copy!

"A Scandal in Bohemia"

A Scandal in Bohemia is the story of Irene Adler – “the woman” – who holds compromising documents over the King of Bohemia. Adler is undoubtedly the greatest female lead in the Holmes canon, and perhaps the individual who Sherlock himself admires most.

As excited as we are about this story, we are doubly excited about Rūta Kuzmickas' original artwork. She has created a suite of pen-and-ink illustrations — over a dozen in total – which capture the story perfectly. Her arresting portrait of Irene on our cover is just the beginning.

A step up from "The Masque of the Red Death"

Because of your support of The Masque of the Red Death, we were able to invest time and resources into No Reply, allowing us to take on a project which, a year ago, we would have thought was impossible. We listened to your feedback, and we believe that A Scandal in Bohemia will prove to be a big step up for us.

Here are just a few of the changes we’ve made:

  •  A Scandal in Bohemia is four times the length of Red Death, and produced in a significantly larger format (7.5’’ by 11’’ rather than 5.5’’ by 9’’).

  •  A Scandal in Bohemia features original artwork, and is signed by the artist.

  •  A Scandal in Bohemia is printed on Zerkall-bütten mouldmade paper in its Hardbound De Luxe, De Luxe, and De Scandale states. This paper takes the impression of letterpress beautifully, features a wonderful deckle edge, and is watermarked.

  •  A Scandal in Bohemia uses a quarter-cloth flatback binding, rather than a case binding, which allows the book to lie flat when opened with greater ease.

We hope you'll consider continuing to support the press as we undertake our most ambitious edition yet.

Thank you, as always, for interest and consideration,

FINAL UPDATE: Survey / Thank You / What's Next?
over 3 years ago – Sat, Jan 02, 2021 at 07:39:03 PM

Collectors and friends,

The Masque of the Red Death has fully shipped! Only five paperbound, eleven hardbound, and two de luxe copies remain at No Reply Press. In other words, the edition is fully subscribed, finding its home on your shelves across the world. It's a terrific feeling for us, knowing that our work has gone far and wide.

There are a handful of peculiar packages where we are waiting on information, or where the books will ship on Monday. In these cases, we'll reach out individually. If you haven't yet received your book and don't hear from us – it's on its way!

We wanted to take a moment to thank you one last time for your support of this project. But first, please help us by filling out this collector survey. Your feedback is invaluable as we set the course for No Reply's future!

Thank you, thank you, thank you

In 2020, No Reply Press went from a casual hobby among friends to a full-fledged small business. This is thanks entirely to your support on this campaign, and your subscriptions to the other books we published this year – The Great Man, The Failurist, The Most Efficient Language, and Preludes. Our little press would not have survived the year without you – not by a long shot.

We're met every day with a stark reminder of how difficult 2020 has been for small business. Our office and bindery are located in the historic Campa building in Portland, and over the course of 2020, four of our six neighbors in the building have gone out of business. We avoided the same due simply to your support, encouragement, and enthusiasm.

Because of your support, our little team is gainfully employed doing what we love – it's hard to overstate how much that means! Thank you.

Improvement / What comes next?

With that being said, we're really excited about improving our work in 2020. We learned a lot with this experience, and we're ready to tackle more ambitious projects. We spent a good deal of 2020 working with artists and authors and papermakers and craftspeople of every stripe to build a 2021 publishing agenda which should prove a step – or two – above 2020's. The first of these books will be announced here on Kickstarter in ten days.

Mark your calendar: January 11th at 9am Eastern!

We're thrilled with this project, and hope you like it too. The book is significantly larger than Red Death, and over four times as long. It uses fine Zerkall mould-made papers from Germany, stunning marbled papers from Italy, and it features original illustrations by one of Oregon's most exciting artists.

The best way you can continue to support our work is by subscribing. We hope you'll consider doing so when the book is announced!

In the meantime, thank you for everything, and happy new year,

Shipping is 99% done!
over 3 years ago – Wed, Dec 16, 2020 at 11:33:39 AM

Friends,

The headline says it all: Shipping is 99% done!

If you haven't yet received your package, you'll automatically be sent a tracking code from the postal service when they scan it into their system. This sometimes takes a day or even a few after we hand the package over to them. Our local postal system had really slowed down this year, but we've seen that once the packages leave Portland they continue on without delay.

There are a few packages still being assembled: These are primarily de luxe and de morte books, as we added something extra to them. These will be shipped by the weekend!

We're going to post our final project update this weekend to confirm that all packages have been shipped and to share one last "Thank you!" for making this edition (and really all of our work in 2020) possible.

Very best wishes until then, and happy holidays!

Shipping Resumes / All remaining packages to be shipped by December 11
over 3 years ago – Tue, Nov 24, 2020 at 04:24:48 PM

Friends,

We are pleased to announce that shipping has resumed. When our office and workshop were burglarized in September, we had about one fifth of the packages remaining to be sent. If you have not yet received your package, it will be sent by December 11 at the very latest.

As we've written before, when the burglars stole our electronics, they used cartons containing our books to haul the booty out. About forty of our books were lost. Luckily, we had *just enough* artist's proof copies to replace them, so we didn't need to go back to press on the book. We did, however, need to order new leather to be tooled, and new custom-mixed paints for more paste paper. We also needed to acquire new computers and a label printer to resume shipping. That's what caused the delay.

But now, we're back up and running and better than ever! Thank you all for your patience and support. It was a difficult two months, but we believe we're better for it.

We'll post another update before the end of the month. In the meantime, very best wishes and happy Thanksgiving!
